This is a condition that causes her chronic pain. In her specific instance, her knees and ankles are pretty wrecked, leading to reduced walking speed. She uses a cane for help, but is not reliant on it--if the cane were taken away or broken, she'd be able to walk. It'd just be more painful and exhausting.
